- Community | Panyame
A Community Conservancy Uplifting, Empowering & Conserving. We are in this Together At Panyame Conservancy, we take immense pride in being classified as a community conservation area. We are committed to forging meaningful partnerships with the vibrant local communities that have lived here for generations. We firmly believe that this collaborative spirit enriches not only the lives of the community members but also empowers them to actively engage in the preservation and management of this cherished environment. From vital healthcare initiatives to educational programs and employment opportunities, we're dedicated to ensuring that the community not only thrives but also plays an integral role in safeguarding the natural wonders that define Panyame Conservancy. This harmonious relationship lies at the very heart of our conservation efforts, making it a cornerstone of our mission and a source of immense pride for the Panyame Conservancy family. Kutandara Committee CONSERVATION COMMITTEE 'Kutandara' is the Shona verb, which can be translated as,” to hang out”. The best way to solve any problem in our experience, is to sit around the fire, or under a tree where you can 'tandara' properly! The committee was formed in order to build a solid bridge for communications and co-operation between the Panyame Conservancy and the community. This initiative has proved to be a great success in solving numerous problems in the area. Effective communications is essential in any relationship! Healthcare Projects AMBULANCE PROJECT In recognition of the urgent need for swift medical assistance, particularly in cases of malaria and human-wildlife conflict incidents, Panyame has donated a fully equipped ambulance to the local clinic in Chinthopo. Almost daily, these incidents occur, necessitating immediate transport to the nearby clinic. This ambulance not only provides essential transportation but also stands as a symbol of Panyame's commitment to the health and safety of its community members. Through this gesture, lives are safeguarded, ensuring timely access to vital medical care during critical moments. Of critical importance is the impact of this project on the maternity ward at the Chinthopo clinic, where female patients experiencing complications during childbirth can now be transferred via road to the district hospital. Employment LOCAL TALENT POWERS PANYAME We proudly employ approximately 70 passionate individuals, with a focus on drawing talent from the vibrant local villages surrounding our wilderness. With an average ratio of one breadwinner supporting eight dependents, our employment strategy directly impacts the lives of around 400 community members. By prioritising employment from these villages, we not only provide essential livelihoods but also cultivate a sense of shared responsibility for the conservation of our natural heritage, forging a stronger bond between Panyame and the communities. Water Is Life ONGOING DRILLING PROJECT This heartfelt initiative focuses on drilling boreholes in areas where access to clean water is direly needed. Upon completion, these boreholes are equipped with solar pumps, ensuring sustainable access to this vital resource. Working hand in hand with the conservation committee and local leaders, our thumper drilling rig strategically moves to new locations, prioritizing areas identified as most in need within the community. This collaborative approach not only addresses immediate water scarcity but also lays the foundation for long-term community well-being and sustainable conservation efforts. Get Involved Knowledge is Power EDUCATIONAL COURSES FOR KIDS Joining forces with local schools, teachers, parents, and community leaders, Panyame hosts immersive 5-day courses for kids from local villages. - Cheetah Project | Panyame
Our dedication to wildlife conservation is deeply rooted in our comprehensive area management practices. These practices are not just about maintaining the beauty of the landscape but are crucial for the sustenance and protection of the diverse flora and fauna that call the conservancy home. Through meticulous management of roads, water resources, and forest areas, we strive to create a harmonious balance between nature and the necessary human interventions for conservation. The Panyame Cheetah Project A Historic Return to the Wild ONE OF AFRICA'S LARGEST CHEETAH REINTRODUCTIONS IN UNDERWAY In 2022, a single cheetah was spotted moving through the dust of the Panyame Conservancy — the first seen in this vast wilderness in decades. Once believed to be locally extinct in the region, cheetahs had long vanished from this corner of Mozambique. But that sighting changed everything. That one moment sparked a mission — to bring cheetahs back to where they once thrived, and to do it at a scale never attempted before. The Panyame Cheetah Project is reintroducing cheetahs to our 210,000-hectare unfenced conservancy: a landscape of floodplains, forests, and wild bush where these animals belong. So far, sixteen cheetahs have been successfully translocated from South Africa, with more on the way. Once settled in bomas, each individual is carefully monitored before being released into the wild. Using telemetry, GPS collars, and on-the-ground tracking, our team follows their every move — ensuring each step into freedom is backed by science, care, and constant observation. This is now one of the largest cheetah translocation efforts in history. But more than that, it's a story of return, resilience, and hope — a turning point not only for Panyame, but for cheetah conservation across Africa.
